Tailgating 101

Football season is well underway, baseball and soccer fans are gearing up for the playoffs, and hockey fans are ready for another exciting season. All this means millions of Americans across the country are in full-on fan mode. And for many fans, the hours leading up to the game are a big part of the whole experience. To help you prepare for your next tailgate—whether at the stadium or in your own backyard—we asked sports fans what tips they have for enjoying their time at the tailgate and the big game.

“Weather can make or break a good tailgate. Always be prepared, especially in the Midwest where you could need sunscreen, rain boots, and HotHands all in the same week!”

—Emilee, Iowa Hawkeyes Fan

“In my opinion, the number one requirement for tailgating is your fellow tailgaters! You have to have them. Yes, brats, burgers, drinks, and bar-b-que, are all great, but you cannot have a great tailgate without family and friends. The memories you make and great times inside the game last forever—way past the awesome burger you had in the parking lot.”

—Mike, Sporting KC Fan

“A game of washers or corn hole is always a great addition to a tailgate. When you’re with family and friends, a little friendly competition adds a festive touch to the tailgate. If you’re tailgating with a group you don’t know very well, games can act as great ice breakers and offer a fun way to get to know your fellow tailgaters!”

—Barbara, Mizzou Tigers Fan

“Be sure to stay warm during those cold games! Obviously layering up, but I’ve always fought my feet getting cold by game time. The ‘hot hands’ foot strips are fantastic but tend to wear out by game time, so I started bringing a sleeping bag to wear from my waist down. It keeps you warm, and it keeps your feet from being directly on the concrete—game changing! (Don’t forget the trash bag to put on the outside of the sleeping bag if it’s wet and raining.)”

—Mitch, Kansas City Chiefs Fan

“The key to a great tailgate is the people you’re with. And don’t forget your tailgating flagpole—whether you make it yourself out of PVC pipe or buy one. It’s festive and it helps your fellow tailgaters find your spot!”

—Steele, Kansas City Chiefs Fan
