Wise Words: From Dad

This month, as we celebrate Father’s Day, we recognize the wealth of wisdom dads of all ages have passed down to their children. Whether they’re offering financial advice, professional advice, relationship advice, encouraging us in our daily lives, or dispensing a bit of tough love, dads are everyday heroes full of wisdom who are worth celebrating.

What are some words of wisdom your dad has shared with you?

My dad often said, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” And this wasn’t just a saying of his—he lived that way. I don’t remember him ever speaking poorly of anyone.
—Nancy, St. Louis, Missouri

“Put people first.” With these words, my father has taught me the importance of investing in people, learning from and cultivating others’ talents, forming meaningful relationships, and contributing to my community.

He also says, “Always be on the generous side of fair.” My father’s desire to be on the generous side of fair reminds me of the grace God often extends to me.
—Caroline, Little Rock, Arkansas

“Work hard; play hard.” My dad encouraged me to find a healthy balance in life and learn how to work hard and play hard: to get the job done, and to do it well, but also have fun too.

He also says, “A few butterflies are a good thing.” To this day, his words give me the extra boost of confidence I need.
—Barbara, Jefferson City, Missouri

I’ll never forget the first time my dad said, “Your lack of planning is not my crisis.” You better believe I learned to get things done in a timely manner!
Rebecca, Columbia, Missouri

When my siblings and I were teenagers and starting to go out with friends, my dad’s parting words to us were always, “Use good judgement.” It has always stayed with me!

He also told us, “Don’t make someone else feel bad about themselves in order to make yourself feel better.” That came up when we were kids and would bicker and fight. To me, it is weak character to behave that way, and I quote this to my own kids now.
—Meredith, Houston, Texas
