DIY Décor: City Signs

There are certain cities that are especially meaningful to our family—some we’ve visited on vacation, and others are where our loved ones live. When we moved into our current house, I had several frames from a previous home I wanted to repurpose, so I made city signs to hang near our front door.

I especially like these signs for three reasons: 1) they’re incredibly simple to make; 2) whenever we walk out our front door, we think about our family and friends who live in each one of those cities; and 3) because of where these signs hang, our guests often ask us about the significance of each city, making these signs not only incredibly budget-friendly wall décor but also wonderful conversation starters!

While these signs are easy to design on your home computer, I’ve provided both Microsoft Word and Apple Pages customizable downloads if you’d like to edit the signs to make them meaningful to you.

About the Signs

  • Page size: Standard 8.5 x 11, landscape orientation. I simply centered this paper in a frame that was matted for an 8 x 10 print.
  • Fonts: For the city name, I used Engravers MT, size 80. For the state name and the mileage, I used Avenir Next, size 50. The arrow shape is available as an insert in both Word and Pages.
  • Paper: I just happened to have specialty paper lying around (a white paper with gray lines), but if you don’t, stores such as Hobby Lobby or Michael’s sell individual sheets of speciality paper.
  • Frames: I had three of the 12 x 16-inch KNOPPÄNG Frame from IKEA ($9.99).
